Rescue of a swan on the river Uecker:

Today came a call from the fire brigade: a swan couple is completely icy on the partly frozen Uecker

Something which Jens had not seen before. Look at the ice lumps ...

      Action for the rescue:

My goodness, hopefully the ice keeps ...

Unfortunately only one of the swans could be caught, the other one still was able to move too much ... but Jens and the fire brigade team will try again tomorros, because the couple should be able to stay together. The one with the worse injured plumage, caused by the lumps of ice, was taken to the Storchenhof

We would like to say "thank you" to the fire brigade for the fantastic cooperation for the animal welfare!!!

    • It was only yesterday that Jens and other helping hands went to get some food for the deers which are starving and getting weaker every day.

And shortly after they already were there to take some food:

And today some youngsters came to the Storchenhof and told Jens that a deer is lying somewhere and is not going away if you come closer. So Jens went and found a totally exhausted animal which he immediately took home to the Storchenhof. It is so weak, that it hardly can stand any more... let´s hope it will survive!

And five young swans are at the Storchenhof,- one after the other was brought.

The last one was found yesterday in the middle of the wood ... how lucky that it was found and brought to the Storchenhof

This winter claims its victims. Lucky all the animals and birds who are found and can get help.

Thanks to all people who show mercy with the creatures!

Just before the fire brigade of Neuensund ...

... brought this swan to the Storchenhof. The very weak animal had flown against the roof of a house about 23 km away from Papendorf. No injuries are to be seen!

And very sad news: the deer didn't make it. It was just too weak and died this morning.

    • A new foster swan arrived at the Storchenhof. He was found in Pasewalk totally exhausted

Here the big "get to know each other", all the other swans came to say "hello" to the newcomer and even the goose came running ...

    • Today Jens and his helpers went to get some more food for the deers. Beside hay, beet and corn the men also went to cut blackberry bushes for offering the branches to the deers, because they like the leaves:

      Here the bird feeding place:

4 bird kinds are to be seen. Do you know which ones?

With watchful eyes this sparrowhawk is sitting in the tree. Is it a young bird? Because his flight for prey was not successful,- lucky small birds. Joy and sorrow often come at the same time ...:

This afternoon Jens picked up another foster animal from an area in 41 km distance. The bittern was already yesterday evening sitting unter a fir tree. After it was still there this morning the owners of the place phoned Jens and asked for help.

The bird is totally exhausted and starved and Jens only can hope that it will survive with his help.

The bittern unfortunately didn't make it. It died the same evening.

Today a new foster swan arrived at the Storchenhof. He was picked up totally exhausted and starved at a factory site in Torgelow:

    • Blessing in disguise had a young swan, who first made a crash-landing in a tree. And on top of it got stuck in the tree so that the fire brigade had to help to free him.

Finally the office in charge, who first brought the swan to a vet for check up, - fortunately no injuries to be seen, sent him to the Storchenhof in Papendorf.

Heinzi and Mr. Klüsendorf took him over:

Now he enjoys life with the other foster swans together:

    • Today the foster swans were released to nature. Thanks to the helpful fire brigade of Pasewalk who took over the transportation of the animals:

By arrival at the river Uecker the swans happily swam away into a new life:

How lucky all of them were to come to the Storchenhof and to get a chance for life!

Another forster animal was brought to the Storchenhof today, - a male sparrow hawk, born last year. He was sitting since a few days already in a garden in Pasewalk starved, unable to fly anymore and extremely small. Thanks to Mr. Grünberg who brought him to the Storchenhof.

And the foster storks just enjoy the warming sunbeams,- finally the weather goes in direction to spring time!

    • Farwell photos from the barn owl:

Tonight Jens will keep the aviary open, that the bird can make its way to freedom again!

Also the sparrowhawk is feeling fine again and Jens will release him to freedom in one of the following days:

    • Today the sparrowhawk was ringed:

and after he was released to nature, but ...:

... somehow that was too early, his flying skill is not really what it should be, so Jens caught him again and brought him to safety.

The honey buzzard also was ringed, but for him it will take some more weeks before he could be released to nature:

    • This juvenile tawny owl was found today by some construction workers on a place where no trees are to be seen. They called Jens, who immediately went there and also looked for more tawny owls, without success. But this here will have a chance at the Storchenhof. Jens is feeding it every hour and it is very hungry, most likely pretty starved.

    • Accident with an overhead line. This poor stork was brought today to the Storchenhof with a badly broken wing:

Now they just have to find out if it was a breeding stork ...

    • Show your feet ... the tawny owl was ringed the day before yesterday:

A juvenile long-eared owl was taken as toy by a cat at the camping site in Grambin. And that's how the poor animal looks like. Jens picked her up and brought her to the Storchenhof, where she'll stay for quite a while Jens presumes,- concerning her condition.

    • Already three little tawny owls at the Storchenhof. Jens brought the third one yesterday from Schmuggerow. There it was already sitting for two days helpless and the cats of the village showed interest ...

    • Well, what a story ...

... from this liquid manure deposit in Pasewalk

on June 29 this poor stork was rescued...

... by construction workers and the owner. Nobody knows for how long the stork was already inside this deposit. Fact was, that the stork was totally exhausted and apathetic. On the Storchenhof of course everything was done to help him to survive. Jens tried to wash him as much as possible, and by that to reduce the smell...

After the bath the stork was sitting in the sunshine trying to get dry and warm:

If it is a breeding stork of one of the nests in Pasewalk was not known.
      Viele Grüße von
      Brit

„Man sieht nur mit dem Herzen gut. Das Wesentliche ist für die Augen unsichtbar.“

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • The day after:

The poor stork seems to feel a little better, at least he can stand on two legs and the flight behaviour is there again, which is a good sign as Jens knows:

Jens put him together with "Charly" the honey buzzard in an enclosure. Charly might have been surprised about the strong smell (look at the long nose!!! ) ....:

But Jens also put a biiig bath tub there and the stork used that obviously the whole night!!!

This was a day on the Storchenhof! Two more foster animals Jens had to pick up: this little storklet (here lying on a hot-water bottle, because he was highly reserved:

... who together with his sibling was thrown out of the nest. The sibling either was already dead or did not survive the fall. Reason for the happening were again grass balls in the tummy ... already the evening before the residents had heard the storklets screaming. Tummyache, better called colic is very painful and that's exactly what these grass balls do.

Thanks to the people who took care and also cared that the storklet could come to the Storchenhof!

      Brit

„Man sieht nur mit dem Herzen gut. Das Wesentliche ist für die Augen unsichtbar.“

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • And the other forster animal which arrived was this young kestrel who was found sitting on the street in Pasewalk. Now he is on the Storchenhof and can grow up in peace:

In the meantime Charlys roommate started eating very well and obviously wanted to take off for freedom. But first he has to take a few more baths because the smell is really tremendous! Poor Charly!

And the small storklet enjoys his served dinner:

And today was the day: Jens brought the stork with blessing in disguise (or the one with the strog smell) near to the place where he was found and released him. And off he went,- in direction to one of the nests, where 4 youngsters are in ...:

On the meadow close to the nest the stork took a break. Collecting food for the youngsters???

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • Today two of the stork youngsters were brought outside on the Storchenhof. The adult storks from the "upstairs" nest watched the doings very curiously!

The third one still has to remain inside, it's still a little bit too small.

Joy and sorrow are so close together ... and so we unfortunately have to tell, that the squirrelbaby died today. Why... nobody knows, because it was very lively and eating very well ... it's so sad!

    • Today at the Storchenhof:
The two foster storks making their first steps to nature again and are greeted happily by another foster stork:

Training the wings is most important:

The unable to fly adult stork ... what's his intention!?:

Happy' hello' to Frieder, Mahal und Apoll:

In the evening one of the "released" storks joins the three youngsters in their nest:

    • Yesterday at the Storchenhof:

who is able just flies over the fence:

This raven was brought from Sprengersfelde to the Storchenhof. Obviously he had collsision with a car. Injuries are not to be seen, but he cannot fly - not yet!?

But feeding is well and he is very hungry!

    • These three little hedgehogs were brought to the Storchenhof the other day, they were found in a horse stable and after no adult animal showed up brought to the Storchenhof. From there they were brought to a hedgehog station:

    • This young stork was broughtfrom Pasenow today to the Storchenhof. He was left alone in the nest, his parents and the siblings had left already two weeks ago for their winter habitat. Storky is very hungry!

but as you can see storky is very happy about the served food at the Storchenhof. No more hunger! :) :) :)

    • One day a swan found on a field beside of the Highway uninjured but hungry and weak...,

... the other day a young sparrowhawk who was hunting and got in collision with a hedge. Injuries are not to be seen, but now he is at the Storchenhof for rehabilitation (and for food he also doesn’t have to hunt while staying there). Thanks to Mrs. Jaeschke who picked him up at Ueckermünde and brought him to the Storchenhof.

    • January 9 2011

People from the THW found today near Nechlin this deer lying in a water puddle, rescued it and brought it to the Storchenhof, where immediately was taken care of the starved animal.

Yesterday the heron was released back to nature and today the swan.

    • Ghee, due to the warm weather the hedgehogs seem to misunderstand the situation, coming out of their winter habitat and are straying around, many are unfortunately hit by cars … this one was lucky, he was brought to the Storchenhof yesterday, where he can spend the rest of the winter in safety together with numerous conspecifics:

    • A new storklet arrived at the Storchenhof and is now together with the little one which was thrown a few days ago out of the Storchenhof nest. The new storklet was brought yesterday evening by Doreen und Mirko from Storkow, where it also was thrown out. It has an injury on its back:

Little storklet is lucky that it was found and brought to the Storchenhof. I wouldn_t like to know how many of the small ones were not that lucky in this year with too little rain ….

    • This young Stork, which was brought from Woldeck yesterday evening, had bad luck with his first flight out of the nest, he couldn’t manage to come back. Its beak also was completely sticky, but now everything is alright again.

It ate well and now he is in best company with the other two Storklets in the Storknest at the Storchenhof.

    • This young stork from Penkun was not so lucky exercising his first flight,- he landed on the road. But there were Storkfriends around who helped him and phoned the Storchenhof. Jens went on the way to pick up the unlucky fellow and bring him to the Storchenhof

There he put him to the other three fellows, but one of them thought thats too narrow and flew of to the Storchenhof nest ….
