The youngsters in Zeltweg are feeling fine and makling their exercises, because soon they will take off. Forunately the heavy thunderstorms didn´t harm them. This year is a very bad year for storks also in Austria! This photo is from today morning!

    • Some news from the Storchenstation in Tillmitsch

      Rescue efforts:
June 27 a stork was brought to the Storchenhof from the peoples of the animal rescue:

      And also a swan.

The swan had an open wound in the chest and did not survive the drive to the Vet.

The stork had a faecal-beak and is now on the Storchenstation.

    • July 9 in Kumberg …

… a very emaciated stork fell out of the nest and the animal rescuers brought him to the Storchenhof. He had a faecal-beak and and injured wing. Our Vet, Dr. Brandl, took care of him. The healing is improving. He will be able to migrate.

A very special rescue effort from the police in Straß.

July 18 passers-by found a stork in the village and brought it to the police in Straß. Inspector Karl Linninger and inspector Frank Roschker took over the storklet. It came to the Storchenhof. Because of the strong thunderstorms he fell out of his nest, had abrasions on his legs and was bleeding out of his beak. Storkfather is taking care of him now.

A stork from Kirchbach had as a chick broken both legs. These grew together crippled

He could not use his legs any more. The Vet put the animal out of its misery.

    • Now a report from our animals on the Storchenhof in Tillmitsch:

      Martin nowadays is much disciplined.

Our beautiful heron is feeling very well on the Storchenhof.

      "Model" Maxeline

She is enthralling our visitors again and again with her clattering.

Stritzi and Gustl are feeling fine. This year they don´t have any responsibilities and enjoy life by making excursions.

Here Stritzi with her winter love Hansi:

In Ossi’s case we thought she would have chicks somewhere, but it does not look like any more. She is the whole day on the Storchenhof and is not carrying away any food.

    • And also for these three orphaned hedgehogs which were brought to her yesterday the 'stork mother' of Zeltweg is taking care. With a weight of onl 150 g they came and until 250 g they will stay before they will be released to nature again:

    • News from the Storchenhof in Tillmitsch!

This kingfisher flew against a window and got a brain concussion. But staying on the Storchenhof as Rehab made him ready for nature again. And so he was ringed and released.

This stork was caught by a gust of wind, thrown against the wall of a house. But now he is on the Storchenhof and has the chance to recover.

This stork hit the roof of a house and and got bruising and his left leg was injured. He is also now at the Storchenhof and has a good chance to be released to freedom again soon.

But now a very sad story is following, which is happening in that kind again and again. Because then, when irresponsible dog owners let their dogs run free also when a stork (or crane etc.) is near by. This might be a death trap for the bird,- like in this case near Tillmitsch:

This adult stork was on the meadow looking for food when the heavy rain came and soaked him through. A free walking dog recognized the chance for a prey and the wet stork did not have a chance to fly away.

The end of the story: the poor stork got bitten badly, as the picture shows, and neither the doctor nor the good care at the Storchenhof could help the poor animal to survive,- he died, most likely also due to inner injuries.

The storks are still around in Zeltweg, also the youngsters. Unlikely that they will still migrate, all others are gone.....:

Very sad news also come along. The strange unringed stork who stayed with them the last couple of weeks today hit the edge of a roof and broke his neck. It was a young stork from this year ..... it´s so sad!

    • October 19 2009

In the meantime it is already October and all 5 storks stayed in Zeltweg, did not go for migration.

Yesterday a dangerous incident happened. Around 1 p.m. the storks circled above the village as suddenly a helicopter at least six times flew directly into the circle of the storks. He seemed to chase them. Finally they flew scared to their nest, then the pilot turned round. I reported this to Mag. Walcher from the BH Judenburg and he will take care of the case. If the helicopter would have crashed it would have fallen onto a school house.

Something similar already happened in summer and I am afraid this crazy pilot might show up again.

News from the Storchenhof in Tillmitsch:

Stritzi´s every year winter friend from Kumbert did not show up. Helmut thinks, that his partner or one young stork ist still around there. So most likely Stritzi has to spend the winter without Hansi:

Maxeline doesn´t need anybody else but the storkfather. Whenever he is around and in addition got a foodbucket with him, he is never alone!!!

All other storks, 13 in number, among of course also Ossi:

      and Blacky:

Stay over the winter and also a heron.

      The swan who´ll get a ‚new foot‘

already is in preparation for this. Our vet Mag. Manfred Brandl and the orthopedics Skergeth made an impression. That is the same orthopedics who also made the prosthesis for stork Flori.

    • Action in Zeltweg!

5 storks will stay over the winter, so some preparations have to be done.

To make the nest safe against storms, Engineer Hammer from the company Sgardelli was kind enough to provide a kind of frame as you can see on the photos. After the nest is in imbalance and is carried by a side brunch of the spruce, it was for the working people not easy to fix this. Only with the help of a mobile crane they could do it:

Thanks for the help for the storks also from far away!

Since December 16 the storks in Zeltweg take the offered food, which is very necessary after the ground is totally frozen ...

... Sunday the temperatures were down to -19°C and everything is snow covered,- so no chance fort he storks to find food on their own. How lucky, that there are people who care about the storks and don´t let them starve!

      Mail from Zeltweg:

The storks are fine. I am feeding them two times daily with warmed up day-old chicken and once in a while as a tidbit a few small rainbow-trouts. For all this I had to by two freezers and in October about 10 000 day-old chicken were frozen.

No shooting directly around the nest during the New Year´s Eve, but it was to be heard from all surroundings. So this at aroun 9 p.m. was too much for the storks and they started flying into the moon lighted night. The night they spent out of town on an old building. Late morning they came back unharmed and enjoyed their meal.

      Lunch is served:

nothing is better than flying ...

... and now also heavy snow in Zeltweg. Only good to know that for the storks are well taken care. Thanks to Zeltweg!!!

      What is written from Zeltweg:

Last weekend were pleasant temperatures and sunshine pure (look at the pictures!), today already minus 13°C again:

In our garden we always put food for the craws. In the meantime also a buzzard happily takes the opportunity to get some food. But he must not stay too long at the feeding place … otherwise the craws will help him off…!

      better late then never ...

      Christmas present for swan Mimi

An early Christmaspresent for our injured swan Mini came from the company Skergeth. To give her the chance for another few happy years the orthopaedic company Skergeth made the artificial leg free of charge

      http://www.der-storchenvater.com/tl_files/Bilder/Tierrettungen/2009/Schwan%20Mimi/15_Anpassen%20der%20Prothese6.jpg[/IMG]

The artificial leg was made, that Mimi even can go into the water with.

The first steps were rather strange for her.

Again and again she had to rest, before she lively waddled further on.

We all had been very touched and thankful, that mimi got such a good chance. She seems to get along very well.

We would like to say thank you again to all the people involved at the Skergeth company Firma Skergeth for helping swan Mimi!

In the meantime it is also deep winter at Tillmitsch and the Storchenstation.
Inzwischen ist auch auf der Storchenstation in Tillmitsch tiefer Winter.

Helmut Rosenthaler is opening the doors of the foster storks enclosures in the morning and is feeding them. After the enclosures have to be thoroughly cleaned from excrements and pellets and the buckets have to be filled with fresh warm water

During the day the storks stroll around in the garden. There is no natural food to be found due to the closed snow cover so food will be served in the late afternoon again.

To protect them from nigthtime ‚robbers‘ the storks who are unable to fly are locked in the enclosures during the night

    • The black storks Blacky and Ossi are only during wintertime a couple. This year they adopted a young black stork and are longing of course for warming sunbeams.

During the last years Ossi always left the Storchenstation in spring to meet her breeding partner who is coming back from the South and to raise their offspring somewhere in the woods. Two years ago she even brought her offspring to the Storchenhof. The youngsters stayed for about one week before they took off with other storks for their winter habitat.

Last year Ossi often came during summer to the Storchenstation to pick up some food to feed her offspring. If they survived and migrated we don’t know.

    • Reading about the storks of Zeltweg:

Twice a day they get preheated food. Early in the morning they are already waiting in the spruce or on the roof of a house, for me to come with the food buckets

During daytime they like to stay in a certain area. So we put there some wooden discs for them to sit on during strong frost. Already on the next morning they took advantage of it. Clever storks, aren`t they!?
And thank you very much for taking such good care for the storks to Monika!!!

    • January 30 2010 at the Storchenstation:

      Romeo und Julia

The most beautiful lovers at the Storchstation are from now on Romeo and Julia a golden pheasant couple

They come from a private owner and will spend their first days on the Storchenstation in the aviary to get used to the place.

The colorful plumage of the male bird attracts in between the white- and black storks most attention.

    • Otherwise not much news from the Storchenstation. Storks and the heron enjoy the warming sun beams

Stritzi, who was kicked out of her nest from the Kumberg storks, also likes to rest on the lower nest to watch the happenings around the garden.

In the meantime it is time for dinner. Where is he, the stork father???

Helmut Rosenthaler knows exactly in which sequence he has to feed. First of course it is Maxelines turn who wants to make sure she gets the best pieces.

Ohhh, there is one is looking ...:

Maxeline is a gourmet, she preferres the little bits of the one-day-chicks:

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • The other storks are waiting patiently till it is their turn

Of course here and there are little quarrels:

How to ingratiate oneself with the stork father? Maxeline got the answer:

Stritzi also had her dinner already and had made herself comfortable in the nest in the front yard.

Once in a while she is also sitting on the chimney on top of the house.

Wintertime was boring for her this season. Her partner Gustl went to his winter quarters in the South and her year-long winter friend Hansl from Kumberg this time brought his breeding partner along and has to be faithful.

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • Meanwhile evening had come and the storks soon must go to their enclosures. Only by this they are protected from nightly attacks by polecats or martens. And again it is Maxeline who was first in her sleeping-quarters.

Of course she is “brought to bed” personally from Helmut Rosenthaler. The nest has to be put in order and Maxeline enjoys the helping hand of her “partner”.

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • The other storks are next.

As soon as the door is closed the discussion about the best sleeping places starts with loud clattering.

The black storks go by themselves into their enclosure when darkness is falling.

And, of course, Helmut Rosenthaler is also released when all his foster animals are well taken care of.

      Viele Grüße von

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • And who is here!?:

House gander Martin, who is, as usual, protecting his beloved ‘Daisy’

Of course Martin and Daisy also will soon go to their sleeping quarters.

Now it became quiet at the Storchenstation. Strietzi took her place on the lower nest.

Only when it is completely dark she will return lonely to her nest in the front yard and maybe think about Gustl who might hopefully be on his migration back ‘home’ from the South ….

      Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
    • Also the heron is feeling very well in the company of the storks

Pipsi the sea gull spend the daytime prefarably at the home pond. Because she only has one wing she has to be special attentive not to become victim of a raptor.

For the night Helmut Rosenthaler is bringing her into her aviary, where she is in safety.

The garden pond is not frozen for the time being so she can enjoy her bath.

But in the meantime he is in good spirits again and both are bussy with building the nest and so ...

    • News from Zeltweg:

No more food-help for the 5 storks is necessary any more. Lately the adult storks chased away the youngsters from the feeding place, but went together in the meadow grounds.

Since mid March the youngsters are not allowed to stay near the nest and they have to go for feeding themselves. But their sleeping place is not far away from the nest. The adult storks are very bussy with building their nest and planning a new family and don't take care of the youngsters any more.

    • At the Storchenstation now is a 3rd stork couple: Lafi and Betty built in the middle of the garden a nest on the ground and there is already one egg in!

Also Maxeline was very busy and lied two eggs in her nest in the aviary (unfortunately unfertilized)

But also this year we can hope for offspring, because also Stitzi and Gustl as well as Max and Sofie are breeding their 3 eggs.

    • From the 10th of May:

Maxeline cares so much about her eggs. What a pity she does not accept a stork as partner:

In the nest of Betty and Lafi no chicks hatched yet. It's doubtful, if this first try to bree will be already a successful one:

In this aviary there is action: in the nest of Max and Sofie already 3 stork chicks hatched. Therefor Helmut Rosenthaler is always putting an extra bucket of very small cut meat that they can feed their offspring:

In the backyard Stritzi and Gustl take care of their first chick:

Last year due to the wet and cold weather all chicks dies. We hope for good weather, that all chicks have the chance to survive!

      Injured baby swan

Thanks to animal friend Josel Steinegger from Graz, this about 6 weeks old swan gets help from the Veterinarean.

Most likely the little swan was attacked by another adult swan and got bad head injuries. Without help of people this baby swan wouldn’t have survived.

Helmut Rosenthaler was able to catch him in time. Vet. Brandl took over the treatment and at the Storchestation he will be well taken care of that he as soon as possible will be released to freedom again.

As Helmut Rosenthaler went to an appointment with the Vet Mag. Brandl he met the young lady with the injured fawn under her arm.

Most likely it happened while cutting that the poor little fawn lost a leg and wouldn’t have had a chance if not from humans.

Lets hope that despite its handicap the fawn will live a long and happy life. By the way: the beautiful lady on the photo, who rescued and is taking care of the fawn is a huntress. • July 19 2010 - Rescue of a young black stork

Actually Mrs. Elisabeth Lorenz together with her husband just wanted to go for picking mushrooms in the area of Deutscheistritz but what they found was this young black stork:

Most likely he was blown out of his nest during the night in a thunderstorm. Mr. and Mrs. Lorenz found him lying on his back and found out, that he is still living.

They brought him covered in a blanket to the fire brigade of Deutschfeistritz, where just by chance four men were present. They of course knew exactly what to do. They contacted the veterinarian Mag. Waschnig, who took first care of the bird. In the meantime Mrs. Senta Mikesch from the Storchenstation in Tillmitsch had arrived to pick up this rare bird.

Because vet Mg. Brandl is on holiday Mrs. Mikesch brought the animal to Mrs. Großmann from the association of "Small wild animals in need", where the vet cared about the injured bird. The bird would not have survived the wing- and leg injuries as well as maggot infestation without the help of a vet.

After that the black stork was brought to the Storchenstation where Helmut Rosenthaler will now take care.

This self created "walking school" gives the black stork the chance to stand up despite his leg injuries.

Of course it is possible, that also other siblings or even the adult storks were blown out of the nest, are also in the nearby surrounding of the discovery location and are wating for help. Nests of black storks are very secret and difficult to find and it would be just luck to find the other storks.

Many thanks to Mrs. Lorenz who stood up for this injured bird. Thanks to the good cooperation of the FF Deutschfeistritz, Mrs. Großmann and the vets as well as the quick rescue operation of Mrs. Mikesch it was possible to safe the life of this shy wood inhabitant.

      Help is needed urgently!

If anybody would like to help the storks in Zeltweg, that they give the youngsters time to go on migration and later try to catch the adult storks and bring them somewhere else (in the hope they won't come back),- what a disaster after all the fights to give the storks a home and help them come over the winter season. Please help and write e-mails to the following addresses to show this people responsible, that this is not only a matter of a small area in Austria, but that also people from around the world are observing the fate of these beautiful storks. Under no circumstances anybody should even think about shooting the storks!!! Please help!
